You can find your daily fix of Wordle right here on the New York Times website. A fresh puzzle pops up every day at midnight, your time.

To start, take a wild guess at a five-letter word. The letters will turn green if they're spot-on, yellow if they're in the wrong spot, or gray if they're nowhere to be found in the day's secret word. For more deets, check out our guide to playing Wordle here and my advanced strategy guide here. We've also got more goodness at the bottom of this post.

Hint time!

So, you ready for some tips? Here we go!

Any "unusual" letters in today's Wordle?

We're considering common letters as those that appear in the old typesetters' phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Memorize it! Say it like "Edwin Shirdloo" for easy recall.)

Three letters from our mnemonic are in play today, with the other two being somewhat common.

The grand reveal:

Are you ready? Today's word is BILGE!

The detective work:

I began with RAISE, TOUCH, and BLEND, then gave BIBLE a shot, which led me to BILGE.

Yesterday's Wordle solution:

Yesterday's game got pretty tough. The hint was "may be considered seductive," and the solution contained three common letters and two less frequent letters.

The solution to yesterday's Wordle was VIXEN.

The basics of Wordle:

The premise of Wordle is straightforward: guess the day's secret word. When you first open the game, you'll see an empty grid of letters. It's all on you to make the first move – type in any five-letter word.

When you guess, the colors will give you clues: green indicates a correct and well-placed letter, yellow indicates a correct letter in the wrong spot, and gray signals a wrong guess altogether. Use these hints to guide your guesses, and go for six, baby! No more than six guesses, or it's game over.

Alternatives to Wordle:

If you want more five-letter word guessing games, we've got you covered. Here are some of the best Wordle alternatives, ordered by difficulty:

  • Wheeldle, which lets you play one puzzle after another.
  • Dordle and Quordle, which require you to solve two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles at once, with the same guesses. There are also variants like Octordle (eight puzzles) and Sedecordle (16 puzzles).
  • Waffle, where you move letters around in a grid to solve several five-letter words at once.
  • Absurdle, where the solution changes after each guess, but must stick to its previous feedback. You'll have to cleverly manipulate the game to corner it into one solution.
  • Squabble, which pits you against other players on a timer – the last person standing is the winner.
  • Antiwordle, where you have to keep guessing letters you accidentally guessed correctly, so you gain an advantage the longer you play.

Common letters in the English language:

The letters that appear most frequently in English language words are H, E, S, R, T, A, I, N, O, U, D, L, C, M, and W.

The game was created by Josh Wardle, a software engineer who developed the game for his partner while in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was later acquired by The New York Times Company in 2021.
