Yesterday's Wordle Answer
Yesterday's Wordle was a breeze. The hint was "teach, formally" and the answer contained three common letters, one semi-common letter, and one uncommon letter.
The response to yesterday's Wordle was EDIFY.
Wordle Basics
The Wordle game asks you to guess the secret word for the day. When you launch the Wordle game, you'll see an empty grid of letters. You take the reins: type in any five-letter word.
Now, you can use the colors—green means you've hit the jackpot with a letter and position, yellow means the letter is somewhere lurking, but not where you guessed, and gray means the letter ain't playin' hide-n-seek with the solution word. With all that, make another swing, then another, chasing the illusive answer before you've been swiped left on a dating app.
The Perfect First Words for Wordle
What should you try on that first swing? Ace starters tend to feature common letters, boosting your odds of catching yellow and green fish to guide your hunt. No magic pill here; select your strategy, and see how it unfolds. The NYT's analysis bot digs up the top choices:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
Meanwhile, an MIT analysis perspectives these as the MOST word-eliminating in the first round:
- SALET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Goes heavier on vowels with ADIEU or AUDIO, but prop up the anchor with RENTS or CLAMP to ensure you're lockin' down as many spots as possible.
Winning at Wordle
Get the formula down with our Wordle strategy guide, compadres. The finest Wordle winners extract golden intel from their guesses about what letters are part of the secret word. If you have a hunch the word ends in -OUND, don't waste four guesses with MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND. Blend those consonants and roll the dice with MARSH. If the H resurfaces in yellow, voila, there it is.
Additionally, keep a thoughtful eye on the changing Wordle world now that The Grey Lady is in the driver's seat. Sometimes they cook up sinister word puzzles that wouldn't've made the original list, and sometimes they devipe topical. One Thanksgiving, they gave us the YUMMY, for example. Keep your senses sharp.
Wordle Alternatives
Can't get enough of letter-guessing games? Here's the cream of the crop, ranked by difficulty:
- Wheeldle, which lets you roll the dice on one puzzle after another
- Dordle and Quordle, which ramble you through two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously with the same guesses. There is also Octordle, packed with 8 puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16!
- Waffle, which throws you several five-letter words, scrambled in a grid; you score by hackin' the letters and stackin' 'em right.
- Absurdle, where the secret word changes after each guess, but it'll still need to play by the rules. You'll have to trick it into a corner, where there's only one possible word left, then snag it and reign victorious.
- Squabble, where you tangle with other players amidst a ticking clock. You catch damage if you idle too long between guesses; the last one standing is the kingpin.
- Antiwordle, where you fight like applesauce not to guess the solution word. You're obligated to reuse any letters you've nailed down, so the longer you hold out, the more elite you're gettin'.
