Wordle: What's the game all about?

You can find Wordle right here on the New York Times website[2]. Each day, a fresh puzzle becomes available at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters will turn green if they're correct and in the correct spot, yellow if the letter is right but in the wrong position, or gray if the letter isn't in the secret word of the day[4]. For more info, check out our guide to playing Wordle and my advanced strategy guide. (You'll also find additional tidbits at the end of this post.)

The Solution to Today's Wordle

Ready to find out? Today's word is MACHO[3].

How I Solved Today's Wordle

My approach started with RAISE and TOUCH, followed by HAVOC as a potential answer. This led me to MACHO and NACHO as the two possible solutions[5].

Yesterday's Wordle Answer

Yesterday's Wordle was a medium difficulty puzzle, with the hint: "Found at a hotel or stadium." The solution contained five common letters.

The answer to yesterday's Wordle was SUITE[6].

Wordle Basics in a Nutshell

Your goal in Wordle is to guess the daily secret word[7]. When you first open the game, you'll see an empty five-letter grid. It's up to you to make the first move: pick any five-letter word.

  • Green mean you correctly guessed a letter and placed it correctly. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)
  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A, and T will all be yellow.)
  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is gray, the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

Guess, learn, and adjust your moves to land on the correct word before you run out of chances, namely six.

Breathe Life into Your First Guess

The best initial guesses contain common letters to boost your chances of getting green and yellow squares to help guide your guessing[7]. While there's no best starting word, the New York Times' Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

  • CRANE
  • TRACE
  • SLANT
  • CRATE
  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that starting with one of these words would eliminate the most possibilities in the first round:

  • SALET
  • REAST
  • TRACE
  • CRATE
  • SLATE

You might also consider picks like ARISE or ROUND. Words such as ADIEU and AUDIO have more vowels but focus on consonants first with starters like RENTS or CLAMP[7]. Decide on your strategy and see how it pans out!

Clinch the Victory in Wordle

We've put together a few guides on Wordle strategies that could be helpful[8]. The main key to success is using your guesses to collect information about the letters in the word: for instance, if the word must end in -OUND, don't squander four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND. Instead, combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H turns yellow, you have the solution.

A final note: the original Wordle used a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after being acquired by the NYT, the game now has an editor who selects the solutions[8]. Sometimes they are tricky words that wouldn't have made the original list, and sometimes they are topical. So remember, there may be a theme!

Wordle Challenges That Scratch a Different Itch

If you're hooked on Wordle and hunger for more five-letter guessing games, check out these top alternatives, graded by difficulty:

  • Wheeldle, which lets you play through several puzzles one after another
  • Dordle and Quordle, which require you to play two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles at a time, using the same guesses. There are also Octordle with eight puzzles and Sedecordle with 16.
  • Waffle, which scramble several five-letter words into a grid, and you play by swapping the letters around to solve.
  • Absurdle, where the solution changes after each guess, but it needs to stay consistent with its previous feedback. To win, you must strategically corral it into a single possible solution, which you then guess, and conquer.
  • Squabble, in which you play Wordle against other players as a timer runs. You take damage if you spend too much time between guesses, and the last player standing wins.
  • Antiwordle, where your goal is not to guess the daily solution. You're required to reuse any letters that you (oops) guessed correctly, and the more time that passes, the better you are at the game.
  • The wordle answer today, MACHO, is currently trending on social media, becoming a topic of discussion in pop-culture.
  • If you're a fan of entertainment, you might find today's wordle solution, MACHO, interesting, as it's not just a game but also a term used in popular culture, often referring to a manly, robust, or aggressive individual.
  • As MACHO is gaining popularity due to today's wordle, you might see it appearing more frequently on social media, memes, and even in casual conversations as people share their wordle experiences.
