Yesterday's challenge was a tough one. The hint was "politically, environmentally, etc." and the answer contained four common letters and one uncommon letter. The answer was AWARE.
Wordle 101: Basic Stuff to Know
The aim of Wordle is to guess the day's secret word. When you first join, you'll see an empty grid of letters. It's up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.
If you get green letters, you've correctly guessed the letter and its position. If you see yellow letters, that means the letter is somewhere in the secret word, but not in the spot you guessed it. Gray letters signal that the specific letter is not in the solution word at all. You have six guesses before the game ends.
Smart Starter Words
Which word should you play for your first guess? Go for options with common letters, as it increases your chances of getting some clues (yellow and green squares) to guide your guessing. Here are a few The Times' Wordle analysis bot suggests:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
Alternatively, try these MIT suggested starters:
- SALET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
Smart choices might also be ARISE and ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO have more vowels, but starting with consonants (e.g., RENTS or CLAMP) can be beneficial.
Nail the Win
Those who succeed at Wordle use their guesses to gather information about which letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end with -OUND, don't waste guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND. Combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H turns yellow, you're on track.
And lastly, keep in mind that the NYT's Wordle editor hand-picks the solutions, sometimes making the game more challenging with themed solutions.

- Wheeldle: Play one puzzle after another.
- Dordle and Quordle: Guess two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously. You'll use the same guesses for all puzzles. There are also versions for 8 (Octordle) and 16 (Sedecordle).
- Waffle: Swap letters around in a grid of several five-letter words to solve.
- Absurdle: The solution changes after each guess, but you've got to strategically push it toward a single option.
- Squabble: Compete against other players with a timer running. You'll take damage if you spend too long between guesses.
