Gettin' Down to the Basics of Wordle
The objective? Guess the daily secret word. When you open the game, you'll see a grid of letters waiting for your move. Choose any five-letter word to start the action.
The colored squares will help you out: green means you got it right and in the right spot. If it's yellow, the letter's in there somewhere, but not in the right place. Gray? It isn't part of the word at all.
Make wise guesses to gather info about the letters in the word. Never forget: winning means gathering clues about the word before you land on the final answer. With that said, let's talk the best starting words to land your opening shot.
Gotta Pick the Right Word to Start
What should you play to get things going? Words with common letters usually increase your chances of getting green and yellow squares. Even if you get grays with common letters, you'll still have some intel to help you rule out possibilities.
According to NYT's Wordle analysis bot, try one of these first:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
An MIT analysis suggests starting with one of these:
- SALET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
If you're feeling adventurous, ARISE or ROUND could be fun options. Need more vowels? Try ADIEU or AUDIO. Stick with consonants? RENTS or CLAMP might work for you. Choose your gameplan and go for it!
Winning Strategies
Winners and losers of Wordle: what's the difference? Winners focus on using their guesses to gather info about the letters in the word. If you know a word must end in -OUND, don't waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know you've hit the jackpot!
