The Lowdown on Wordle
Wordle resides on the New York Times website. A fresh puzzle pops up every day at midnight, according to your timezone.
Start by speculating a five-letter word. The letters of the word will transform colors if they're correct, incorrect placement, or simply not in the puzzle word at all. Check out this guide and my strategy guide for more insights.

Any unusual letters in today's Wordle?
We'll consider common letters as those in the old typesetter's phrase: ETAOIN SHRDLU. Memorize this one! Imagine making friends with Edwin Shirdloo, and he helps you remember. Only one letter today is less common.

Yesterday's Wordle answer
Yesterday's puzzle was more challenging. The hint was a "bird's action" and the solution consisted of four common letters and a common one.
The answer to yesterday's Wordle was PREEN.
Wordle Fundamentals
The mission is to guess the secret word of the day. When you open the game, you'll see a grid of letters waiting for you. It's up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.
Now, observe the colors that are revealed to gather clues about the word: Green signifies a correct guess in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is present somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all.
Guess another word, and then another, aiming to land on the correct word before you run out of chances. You'll get six guesses, and then it's game over.
The Best First Words for Wordle
What should you play for that initial guess? The best starters tend to contain common letters, maximizing the likelihood of getting yellow and green squares to help guide your guesses. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that's still valuable information to help you weed out possibilities.) Some suggested starters include:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- ARISE
- RENTS, or CLAMP
Choose your strategy and watch it unfold.
Winning Techniques for Wordle
Seasoned Wordle champions understand that the key to success is using your guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you have a hunch that the word must end in -OUND, don't waste guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND. Combine those consonants, and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.
Wordle Alternatives
If you're a five-letter guessing game enthusiast, not ready to say goodbye to Wordle, then explore these exceptional alternatives, rated by difficulty:
- Wheeldle, where you can play multiple puzzles in a row.
- Dordle and Quordle, which allow you to take on 2 (Dordle) or 4 (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously, using the same guesses. There's also Octordle, offering 8 puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16.
- Waffle, where you solve several five-letter words, scrambled in a grid, by swapping the letters until you solve.
- Absurdle, where the solution changes after each guess, but it must still follow its previous feedback. You must strategically maneuver it into a corner until there is only one possible word left. Then, guess it and win.
- Squabble, where you play against other players with a time limit. You'll sustain damage if you waste too much time between guesses; the last one standing wins.
- Antiwordle, where the objective is to avoid guessing the day's solution. You'll be required to use any letters that you inadvertently guessed correctly, so the longer it takes you, the better you are at the game.
Not the day you're after? This is the solution to yesterday's Wordle.
- The Wordle game, a daily entertainment on the New York Times website, can be found online every day at midnight in your timezone.
- A common strategy for Wordle involves initially guessing a five-letter word containing letters from the old typesetter's phrase (ETAOIN SHRDLU), as today's Wordle only has one less common letter compared to these letters.
- In yesterday's Wordle, the answer was PREEN, a four-letter word consisting of common letters with one unique one.
