Woods, Charlie Delivers Stunning 65 After Yesterday's 'Psycho' Game at TaylorMade Invitational Event
Title: Charlie Woods Shines at TaylorMade Invitational: Chasing His First AJGA Victory
Step aside golf veterans, because Charlie Woods is putting an impressive show at the American Junior Golf Association's Team TaylorMade Invitational this week. Despite his father, Tiger Woods, recovering from Achilles surgery, young Charlie is making a name for himself with his birdies galore at the Streamsong Resort's Black Course.
In just two days, he's tallied an impressive 17 birdies, not to mention an eagle, placing him in a tie for second with Jessy Huebner and Miles Russell, who emerged as the 2023 AJGA Player of the Year. They're all one stroke behind 36-hole leader, Luke Colton, heading into the final round.
Although a wild opening round saw only three pars, Charlie's golf game is nothing if not resilient. His tumultuous opening round consisted of a birdie, a bogey, a triple-bogey, followed by birdies, and a few more bogeys. Despite these ups and downs, his mental fortitude shone through, as he managed to bounce back with an eagle before reeling off two more birdies.
As the Benjamin School student stood at two-under for his first round, he carded his second and third pars, making brief stops at the 15th and 17th holes. A birdie at the 16th briefly moved him to three-under, but a closing bogey brought him back down to earth, ending the opening day with a score of 70 - three strokes off the lead.
Reenergized for the following day, Charlie set about bridging the gap between him and the leaders by once again making birdie at the first. Thursday's front nine consisted of three more gains and two bogeys, leaving him just a feather's breadth behind the leader at the turn.
However, it was the back nine where the teenager truly came alive, notching a bogey-free score of 31 (-5). This stellar performance propelled him into contention for the title, with his 65 only matched by Canada's Luke Smith.
With three junior titles under his belt – the 2023 Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Major Championship and the Last Chance Regional golf tournament (14-15 age division) – Charlie Woods is hungry for his AJGA first. He'll tee off alongside Phillip Dunham and Sohan Patel in the final round on Wednesday (9:03am ET), ready to snag his fourth junior golf title.
