Women's World Boxing Championships under Close Watch by PricewaterhouseCoopers

Women's World Boxing Championships Welcomes Committee Led by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Overseen by International Boxing Association

Women's World Boxing Championships under Close Watch by PricewaterhouseCoopers

The upcoming boxing championships, set to unfurl in New Delhi, India from March 15 to March 31, are under the watchful eye of an International Olympic Committee (IOC) task force led by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a renowned business advisory company.

Over 300 professional boxers representing more than 65 countries worldwide will take part in these championships, competing across 12 different weight categories spanning from 48 kg to +81 kg. Registration for this prestigious event was announced back in December.

This high-level monitoring comes as a part of the IBA's ongoing compliance evaluation and continuous governance reform. The IBA is devoted to upholding the highest levels of integrity in selecting and assessing all technical officials. This commitment, combined with the assessment of its reform efforts, is hoped to lift the suspension of its recognition by the IOC just in time for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

Interestingly, the IOC has previously suggested excluding boxing from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if the IBA doesn't shape up. The report generated by PwC's observations during these championships could potentially sway the IOC's decision.

The PwC team will work alongside the IBA during the New Delhi championships, along with Prof. Richard McLaren and his globally recognized McLaren Independent Investigation Team. These experts will be responsible for conducting thorough background checks, investigations, and assessments of the competition officials. They'll also be overseeing the IBA Men's World Boxing Championship 2023, scheduled for May 1 to May 14 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

According to Boxing Federation of India's president Ajay Singh, the World Championships serve as a "manifestation of Indian boxing's unmatched credentials." Singh expressed confidence that the World Championships will boost boxing's global presence, especially with the support of the IBA team.

The tournament promises a generous prize fund of $2.4 million. Gold medal winners will pocket a hefty sum of $100,000, silver medalists will receive $50,000, and bronze medalists will be awarded $25,000. The excitement surrounding these Indian boxers, poised to embark on their international boxing journey, is palpable.

In a broader context, the IOC's involvement in monitoring these championships underscores concerns about governance and doping control standards within the IBA. The IOC's supervision is geared towards maintaining Olympic standards, potentially influencing the IBA's recognition and boxing's future participation in the Olympics. Understanding these dynamics helps shed light on the challenges faced by sporting bodies in striving for Olympic compliance.
