Women's Tour de Pologne: Chiara Consonni emerges victorious in the first stage sprint

In the heart of Poland, the 2025 Tour de Pologne Women's race kicked off with a thrilling opening stage in Zamosc. The three-day race, which has moved from late-June to mid-August, attracted a diverse field of seven WorldTeams, four ProTeams, and a combination of Continental, club, and national teams.

The 105.7km race started with a bang, with Chiara Consonni (Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto) setting the pace from the get-go. Iurani Blanco (Human Powered Health) attempted a solo breakaway during the race, gaining nearly a minute on the peloton, but was eventually reeled in before the intermediate sprint for time bonuses. Consonni won the sprint in Szczebrzeszyn with 29km remaining, securing an early advantage.

As the race approached its climax, Lidl-Trek and Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto took up the reins in the last 800 metres of the race. In the final sprint, Kathrin Schweinberger (Human Powered Health) started first but was passed by Consonni and Clara Copponi (Lidl-Trek). Consonni outkicked both Copponi and Schweinberger to take a well-deserved win, her first road victory of the season and her first with the team.

Consonni's victory also earned her the leader's yellow jersey, with a seven-second advantage over Copponi and Schweinberger. The Italian sprinter will wear the leader's jersey in the Tour de Pologne Women with pride as the race moves to Chelm for Stage 2 on Wednesday.

The race route for the 2025 Tour de Pologne Women was primarily flat, favouring sprinters like Consonni. The second stage, a 99.5 km loop around Chełm, is known for its cobbled sprint finish, won by Linda Zanetti. Despite not winning Stage 2, Consonni retained the race lead thanks to time bonuses and consistency.

Chiara Consonni, a strong sprinter, is known for her impressive performances in international races. Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto, her team, is a professional women's cycling team that competes at high levels in such races. The win in the opening stage of the Tour de Pologne Women is a testament to Consonni's form and the team's support.

As the race progresses, sprinters and all-rounders will have their chances to shine on the varied terrain, with Stage 3 offering a mix of flat and possibly rolling terrain. Consonni will be looking to defend her lead and add more victories to her tally in the remaining stages of the Tour de Pologne Women.
