Women's Super League champions: Chelsea secures sixth consecutive title, near domestic treble triumph
Chelsea secures a historic domestic treble for the second time, staying unbeaten in the Women's Super League 🚀
The London-based powerhouse, Chelsea, claimed its sixth Women's Super League (WSL) title on Wednesday, building a dominant lead over the competition and securing a second trophy of the season. With two games remaining, Chelsea sits nine points ahead of second-place Arsenal, who suffered a 5-2 defeat against Aston Villa and saw their chances of catching up dim.
When Chelsea defeated Manchester United 1-0 on the road, they cemented their position as an unstoppable force. England right back Lucy Bronze's headed goal in the 74th minute sealed the deal, making history for the London club as they aim to secure yet another domestic treble in English soccer.
The WSL champions have already checked off one trophy this season, bagging the League Cup. They also booked their spot in the FA Cup final where they'll meet United again on May 18 at Wembley Stadium. However, their dreams of a quadruple were quashed in the Women's Champions League semifinals, where they fell to Barcelona.
This domestic treble marks the second time Chelsea has achieved such a feat, previously accomplishing the milestone in the 2020-21 season. Arsenal, the last team other than Chelsea to claim the WSL, last won the title in 2019.
Chelsea's deep and talented roster has been the key to their impressive season. The team, led by new acquisition Lucy Bronze from Barcelona, boasts a perfect record in all domestic competitions, having won 17 games and drawing the other three in the WSL.
"We knew before the game that Arsenal had gotten beat, so we knew what we needed coming into this game. But we wanted to win, we wanted to keep the unbeaten run this season," Bronze said. "Although we've won the league tonight, we've got two games left – we want to win those games and stay unbeaten this season."
In the offseason, Chelsea made headlines for signing defender Naomi Girma, making her the first woman's soccer million-dollar player, with a reported fee of 900,000 pounds ($1.1 million), surpassing the previous record held by Rachael Kundananji from Madrid CFF.
