Women's sports leadership, as per Nikki Doucet, holds the potential to mold societal norms: "Women's sport can shift cultural paradigms"
On a rainy September Friday in Hertfordshire, the Women's Super League (WSL) 2025/26 campaign kicked off, marking a significant moment in the history of women's football in England. As the league embarks on this new journey, the focus is on taking it to the next level.
Nikki Doucet, the CEO of the WSL, has ambitious plans to achieve this goal. Appointed in November 2023, Doucet brings a wealth of experience from her time at Nike and Citi Bank, as well as her successful career in basketball in Canada.
Doucet's vision for the WSL includes increasing competition and investment in the league. She believes that the success of the England women's national team, the Lionesses, who won back-to-back European Championship trophies with players like Chloe Kelly, Michelle Agyemang, Leah Williamson (injured), Alessia Russo, Lucy Roberta Tough, Ella Toone, and other Lioness legends, should be capitalised upon.
One of the key changes to the WSL structure is the introduction of relegation and promotion for the 2026/27 season, aimed at increasing competition within the league. The WSL is also working on creating more narrative and competition, as well as investment, for the upcoming seasons.
The clubs in the WSL are investing in different ways to capitalise on the success of the league. For instance, Olivia Smith signed for Arsenal from Liverpool for a fee of £1 million, making her the first ever seven-figure women's player in the world. London City Lionesses also strengthened their squad with the signing of Grace Geyoro from PSG in a deal believed to be close to the million mark.
The WSL has also launched its website and is planning to expand for the 2026/27 season. The introduction of a playoff for the 2021/22 season is another step towards creating a more exciting and competitive league.
As the WSL 2025/26 campaign unfolds, the title race is finely poised between Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United. With Doucet at the helm and her vision for the league, it promises to be an exciting season ahead. The future of the WSL looks bright, with the potential for more investment, competition, and success on the horizon.
