Women's Open front-runner Miyu Yamashita posts impressive 65 score
In the historic 2025 AIG Women's Open held at Royal Porthcawl in Wales, Miyu Yamashita of Japan clinched her first major title and LPGA Tour victory. The tournament marked the first time the Women's Open was held in Wales, at the links course Royal Porthcawl.
Yamashita ended the tournament at an impressive 11-under par, holding off a strong challenge from Charley Hull (England) and Minami Katsu (Japan), who tied for second place at 9-under par.
On the final day, Yamashita played a 2-under 70, featuring three birdies and one bogey in challenging wind conditions. This secured a two-shot margin of victory for the Japanese golfer. Hull put up a valiant effort, matching her best finish of the season, but fell short in the final stretch despite her determined play.
Other top finishers included Rio Takeda and A Lim Kim, both at 7-under par. Takeda, another Japanese player, was Yamashita's closest pursuer, finishing at 8 under par for the week after a score of 69 on Friday.
Interestingly, none of the top six players on the leaderboard have won a major championship before.
Lottie Woad, the English phenom, had a setback with a triple bogey on the par-4 16th hole, which brought her back to 2 under for the tournament. Woad, who won the Women's Irish Open last month as an amateur and the Women's Scottish Open in her professional debut last week, missed the cut at the AIG Women's Open.
Defending champion Lydia Ko of New Zealand made the cut on the number, while notable names such as Allizen Corpuz, Canada's Brooke M. Henderson, Rose Zhang, Jennifer Kupcho, Lilia Vu, and South Korea's Jin Young Ko missed the cut.
In the second round, Yamashita shot a 7-under-par 65, going bogey-free and recording seven birdies. She was three strokes ahead of the field after this impressive round. Yamashita's consistent play and impressive birdie streak earned her the lead halfway through the tournament, a position she held onto until the end.
Yamashita's exceptional performance on the fairways was evident, as she hit 13 of 14 fairways in regulation. Four of her birdies came in a five-hole stretch from Nos. 9-13.
With this victory, Miyu Yamashita has added a major title to her already impressive resume, which includes 13 professional tournaments won on the Japanese tour.
