Women's Hockey Cup Finalist: Sanjoanense Outperforms Physics in Semi-Finals

Let's get this rollin': Sanjoanense snags trophy in thrilling final against Torres Vedras

This bad boy right here, Sanjoanense, scored the opening goal thanks to a penalty converted by Catarina Barbosa at the fourth minute, but Torres Vedras fought back with a vengeance! The underdogs surged ahead with a whopping 6-2 victory, thanks to a hat-trick each from Joana Teixeira and Catarina Costa, along with a single goal from Lily Messenger. Matilde Granadas managed to net a brace for Torres Vedras to narrow the gap, but it was too little, too late.

After this scorching semi-final match-up held at the Municipal Pavilion of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Sanjoanense will face reigning champs Benfica in the final(8:00 PM) with their sights set on repeating their sole win in the "queen's cup" back in 2012/13. Sanjoanense took over the reigns of the "queen's cup" for the first time, diluting Benfica's dominance since the 2013/14 season.

The match kicked off at a breakneck pace, inviting plenty of chances for both teams to compete for the goal. Torres Vedras secured the equalizer through Catarina Costa, who missed a penalty but managed to claim the ball before sending it to Joana Teixeira for the score.

The action eased up a bit until the 10th minute when the ball started whizzing around the Torres goal, a presage of the upcoming comeback goals from Catarina Costa, Joana Teixeira, and another from Catarina herself. Torres Vedras dragged themselves back into the game with a cross-shot from Lily Messenger at the 22nd minute, but the flurry of Torres attacks subsided as the opposing team maintained a higher tempo in the second half.

Sanjoanense took advantage of their momentum, extending their lead by 34th and 36th-minute goals from Catarina Costa and Joana Teixeira, respectively. Despite a valiant effort from Torres Vedras, the sixth-placed team in the South Zone of the National women's league fell short, as Matilde Granadas scored a brace at the 44th and 48th minutes, missing a penalty just seconds from the final whistle.
