German Women's Hockey Team Advances to Semi-Finals of European Championships
Women's hockey advance to semi-finals without gaining any points
The German women's hockey team has secured a spot in the semi-finals of the 2025 Women's EuroHockey Championship, following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Belgium on Friday evening at Magentasport.
The match was a tense affair, with both teams displaying their determination to advance to the final. Belgium, who finished second at the last European Championships, has a strong record against Germany, including a previous victory in the ProLeague, once in a shootout.
However, Germany's resilience shone through in the semi-final, as they displayed their ability to handle pressure situations, particularly in the penalty shootout. This was demonstrated in their previous encounters with Belgium, having lost to them in the semi-finals of the European Championships in 2017 and 2023, but securing victory in the shootout during the ProLeague.
Germany's road to the semi-finals was not easy. They finished second in Group A of the European Championship, with notable wins against France (4-1) and a draw with Ireland (0-0). Their advancement was achieved with a goalless draw against Ireland, which proved to be a crucial turning point in their tournament.
Despite missing key players Felicia Wiedermann (knee) and Sonja Zimmermann (thigh) due to injuries, the German team showed great spirit and determination. Sonja Zimmermann even saw some playing time despite her questionable fitness.
The team's semi-final victory sets them up for a challenging fight for the medals. They will face Belgium again, who have a higher quality than Ireland, in the semi-finals on Friday at 8:00 PM. The defending champion Netherlands, who will face Spain at 5:00 PM, is in the other semi-final.
The women's team's performance at the European Championships is a commendable achievement, indicating a strong competitive level in European hockey. Their silver medal finish in the 2025 tournament will undoubtedly be a memorable moment for the team and their fans.
