Women's golf team of Holy Cross organizes its first-ever Crusader Invitational, hinting at more such events in the future.
Holy Cross Women's Golf Team Hosts Successful First Annual Crusader Invitational
The Holy Cross women's golf team made history in October 2024 by hosting the first annual Crusader Invitational at the prestigious Worcester Country Club. This invitation-only tournament, unlike most tournaments in the Patriot League, marked a significant milestone for the team as they welcomed local and regional collegiate golfers to compete.
The tournament, hosted by or associated with the College of the Holy Cross women's golf team, provided an excellent opportunity for the team to showcase their program, strengthen their visibility within NCAA women's golf, and prepare for conference play and other competitions.
On the first day of the tournament, team members, who are usually accustomed to spending their tournament days in hotel rooms, awoke in their dorm rooms, adding an exciting twist to their routine. The team's excitement was palpable as they were hosting their first home tournament, with a portion of the Holy Cross student body attending to support them.
The men's golf team played an active role in the tournament, helping with livestreaming, scorekeeping, and assisting with the course setup. After a day of intense competition, a dinner took place at the club on the Monday night, featuring speeches by Kit Hughes and Sue Curtin. The food served at the dinner was highly praised by the players, with a cheese wheel, beef tenderloin, salmon, crab legs, sliders, and apple crisp among the offerings.
In the individual standings, three Holy Cross golfers finished in the top 10. Tess Breslin finished in sixth place, while Sophia Quinones and Julianna Megan tied for ninth place. The tournament concluded with the white team finishing in eighth place and the purple team securing a impressive third place finish.
Coach Curtin also participated in a Q and A session during the Crusader Invitational, sharing insights about how golf has influenced her career and personal life. The success of the first annual Crusader Invitational has set the stage for future events, with plans in place for the men's and women's golf programs to host a tournament at the Worcester Country Club in alternate years.
The College of the Holy Cross women's golf team not only competed in the Crusader Invitational but also played a part in its organization, showcasing their interest and involvement in the broader campus arts and events. Meanwhile, the men's golf team supported their counterparts, participating in tasks related to the tournament such as livestreaming, scorekeeping, and course setup, demonstrating a shared passion for sports and athletics. The success of the first annual Crusader Invitational has encouraged student enthusiasm for future sports events, possibly even leading to more interdisciplinary collaborations between arts, sports, and other campus activities. With the men's and women's golf programs planning to host a tournament at the Worcester Country Club in alternate years, it seems that the Holy Cross campus will continue to be a hub for athletic excellence and memorable student events.
