A Dominant Showing: Germany's Women's Team Fires Six Past Austria
Austria Crushed by Germany Women's Team in a 6-0 Thrashing - Women's German football team dominates Austria with a 6-0 victory.
Want to witness a goal-scoring bonanza? Look no further than Germany's women's football team. Recently, they emphatically defeated Austria 6-0 in a stunning display of their prowess. This warm-up match for the EM (European Championship, July 2-27 in Switzerland) saw their DFB squad unleashing a flurry of goals, leaving Austria in their wake.
Just 14 seconds into the game, Sydney Lohmann, a midfielder for Bayern Munich, struck the first blow, setting the tone for the match. Lohmann reaffirmed her potential for the upcoming EM with another goal in the 39th minute. The stacked Franz Horr Stadium in Vienna hosted the spectacle, with a mere 5,150 fans bear witness to the onslaught.
Goals continued to cascade for the Olympic bronze medalists, with Lea Schüller finding the net in the 9th minute, Selina Cerci in the 26th, Klara Bühl in the 31st, and Laura Freigang in the 43rd.
A Grand Experiment
With Germany already secured a berth for the Nations League Final Four this autumn, coach Christian Wueck seized the opportunity to experiment. In pursuit of a dynamic roster for the EM, he rotated his players, stating, "It's essential for any squad member to showcase their skills, to prove they belong."
In true Wueck fashion, four players made their way into the starting lineup. Freigang, Kett, Lohmann, and Cerci replaced Dallmann, Nüsken, Brand, and Brand, respectively. This tactical shuffle was intended to amplify the team's versatility.
A Significant Achievement for Schüller
Austria, led by Bayern's Sarah Zadrazil, faced disappointment in their pursuit of EM qualification. They could not match the German team's intensity, with Lohmann's opening goal acting as a harbinger of their fate. Schüller's 52nd goal in 75 international appearances, reached in a powerful header, then signaled Germany's first-half onslaught. With Cerci finishing off a spellbinding team move before the break, Germany sewed up a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Further goals from Lohmann and Freigang before the interval necessitated three substitutions from Wueck following the break. Yet, despite the personnel changes, Germany didn't falter, exhibiting an unwavering intensity. Austria appeared content to limp towards the finish line, eager to avoid a heavier defeat.
Wueck will announce his 23-woman squad on June 12, as preparations get underway in Herzogenaurach on June 19. However, the fitness status of Bayern star Lena Oberdorf and striker Cora Zicai remains uncertain. Germany's opening EM match is against Poland on July 4, with Denmark and Sweden a part of their group as well.
