Women's Football: France Secures a Sixth Victory in the League of Nations Tournament, Held in Iceland

The French female football squad wrapped up the group stage of the Nations League in style on Tuesday, June 3, notching a 2-0 victory over Iceland in Reykjavik. With tickets to October's final four secured, the Blues are set to face off against Germany, Spain, and Sweden.

This latest win, two days before the Euro 2025 roster announcement, highlights the exceptional form of star player Sandy Baltimore, who scored in her fifth consecutive match for the national team. Baltimore's decisive goal, a neat finish from a perfect cross by Melvine Malard (1-0, 74), demonstrated the French team's dominance in the harsh winds and cold temperatures.

The second goal, secured by Grace Geyoro (2-0, 85), amplified the victory and served as a testament to the Blues' resilience in the face of Iceland's early resistance.

As we inch closer to Euro 2025, the team fielded a rotated lineup as tactical changes were made to give everyone valuable playing time. Head coach Laurent Bonadei opted to rest three key players – captains Wendie Renard, top scorer Eugénie Le Sommer, and Kenza Dali – in favor of promising newcomers like Melween N'Dongala and Thiniba Samoura.

Despite the changes, the Blues' defense remained a formidable force, conceding only two goals during the group stage, both from set pieces[1]. Keep an eye out for the team's upcoming roster announcement on Thursday.

In attack, on-form Katoto started from the first whistle, while Kessya Bussy provided support. Notable absences included Kadidiatou Diani, who took a well-deserved rest, and Maëlle Lakrar and Delphine Cascarino, who were suspended for this encounter and returned to their respective clubs[1].

The squad will continue its preparation with a match against Belgium on June 20 in Valenciennes, followed by a contest against Brazil on June 27 in Grenoble. Euro 2025 action kicks off for the Blues against England on July 5 in Zurich.
