Naomi Osaka and Victoria Mboko Set to Clash in Canadian Open Final

In a highly anticipated encounter, Naomi Osaka and Victoria Mboko will face off in the final of the 2025 Canadian Open. This will be their first meeting, as the two powerhouses of women's tennis have never squared off before.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, advanced to the final by defeating Clara Tauson 6-2, 7-6. On the other hand, Mboko, an 18-year-old Canadian rising star, is contesting her first career final at the elite WTA 1000 level. She has made history as the youngest home-grown semifinalist in Canadian Open history.

Osaka, who has not been in a Canadian Open final recently, is making a comeback to a WTA 1000-level final for the first time in over three years, since the 2022 Miami Open semifinal run. Mboko, on the other hand, has burst onto the scene in 2025 with strong performances in Grand Slam main draws and at the Canadian Open, where she has already defeated three Grand Slam champions.

The final represents a classic matchup: a rising young talent versus an established champion and idol. Osaka has expressed honor at facing Mboko, who looks up to her, signaling a special dynamic. The surface favors Osaka's powerful serve and aggressive baseline play, but Mboko has already thrived against top opponents here.

Osaka has shown strong form on outdoor hard courts with impressive baseline power and an effective serve. She advanced steadily, dropping only one set before the final. Notable victories include Elina Svitolina (6-2, 6-2) in the quarterfinals and Clara Tauson in the semifinals. This marks a resurgence after a period of reduced tournament success and time off following childbirth in 2023.

Mboko, meanwhile, has showcased her potential as a rising tennis star at the Canadian Open. She has gotten victories over Grand Slam winners Coco Gauff and Sofia Kenin during the tournament. Her victory over Elena Rybakina marks her first win over a top-10 player in her career. Mboko's backhand has been particularly impressive during the tournament.

This final promises to be a competitive and exciting encounter. Two unseeded players have reached the final of the tournament, a first in 46 years and the third time in its history. Mboko has become the fourth Canadian finalist in the Canadian Open, the first in six years since Bianca Andreescu in 2019. Leylah Fernandez, who faces a tough test against Osaka in the final, saved a match point in the semi-finals to defeat Elena Rybakina and reach the final.

Naomi Osaka has a balanced record in finals, with two victories and two losses. This final marks her return to a WTA 1000-level final and a chance to claim her first WTA 1000 title of the season. For Mboko, a victory in the Canadian Open would mark her first WTA Tour title.

This marks five years since Naomi Osaka last reached multiple finals in a single calendar year. Naomi Osaka was the finalist in the ASB Classic earlier this year but had to retire due to injury. Regardless of the outcome, the final between Osaka and Mboko is sure to be a memorable one.
