Women's British Open Secured by Yamashita from Japan

Miyu Yamashita made history on August 3, 2022, as she clinched the Women's British Open in Porthcawl, Wales. This victory marked her first LPGA major title outside of Japan and her third win on the LPGA Tour overall.

Yamashita's win also marked the first time a Japanese player has won the tournament in three consecutive years. She is the first Japanese woman to win the Women's British Open since Hinako Shibuno in 2019.

With this victory, Yamashita became the sixth Japanese player to win a major. She joined the elite group that includes Hisako Higuchi, who won the U.S. Women's Open in 1977, Ayako Okamoto, who won the Women's British Open in 1984, Hinako Shibuno, Ayaka Furue, and Mao Saigo.

Ayaka Furue and Mao Saigo, both Japanese major winners, were present to celebrate with Yamashita. Ai Miyazato and Ayako Okamoto, prominent Japanese golfers in earlier decades with major success or high finishes, were also part of the celebrations. However, Ai Miyazato's major championship wins are not explicitly listed, so her inclusion in this group may require further verification.

Yamashita's victory increased her career earnings on the LPGA Tour to over $3.5 million. This win also marked her second win of the 2022 season on the LPGA Tour and her first win on the LPGA Tour since making her full-scale entry into U.S. tours in 2022.

Yamashita finished the tournament at Royal Porthcawl with a score of 11-under par. Her win moved her up to 15th in the LPGA Tour's official world golf rankings.

This victory marks the second major championship win for a Japanese player in the last three years, following Hinako Shibuno's win in 2019. Yamashita's win at the Women's British Open is her first major championship title.

Yamashita has won a total of 13 Japanese titles before her entry into the U.S. tours. Her most recent win on the LPGA Tour was at the KLPGA Championship in October 2021.

During the celebrations, Ayaka Furue and Mao Saigo, fellow Japanese major winners, presented Yamashita with a photo commemorating her victory at the Women's British Open. Reflecting on her success, Yamashita noted that the sport of golf had always been a source of joy for her, especially since her first foray into the sport as a young child in Japan.
