Asterisk Talley's Unlucky Scrape at The Women's Amateur Championship

Oof, Asterisk Talley has had some bad luck! Just a day before the 122nd Women's Amateur Championship kicked off, Talley announced on Instagram that she's gotta bow out due to a broken toe. Bummer!

Last week, the 16-year-old American finished in a share of 38th place at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Woke up on Monday with a rough start, breaking her toe in the hotel, she wrote in her Instagram story. Looks like some serious rest and relaxation is required, or she'd have to pull the plug on the British Am.

Ranked 16th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Talley's no newcomer to the golf scene. She's been making waves in the past 18 months, nabbing the runner-up spot at the US Women's Amateur Championship and US Girls' Junior Championship last year. In 2025, she won the Hilton Grand Vacations ANNIKA Invitational and the Fortinet Girls Invitational, and scored a runner-up finish at the Augusta National Women's Amateur, sinking an eagle at the first hole in the final round.

Talley would've been a strong contender for this year's Women's Amateur Championship, which goes down from the 10 - 15th June at Nairn Golf Club in Scotland. Some high-profile players like Catherine Park, Farah O'Keefe, Jasmine Koo, Anna Davis (who won the Augusta National Women's Amateur in 2022), Beth Coulter, Hannah Darling, and Patience Rhodes—all members of the victorious GB&I Curtis Cup team in 2024—are in the field. Four of the world's top 10 and six of the top 20 are set to play, too.

Format-wise, the tournament will feature 36 holes of stroke play on the Tuesday and Wednesday, with the top 64 advancing to knockout match play from Thursday to Sunday. The winner will bag the trophy and a Golden Ticket to the AIG Women's Open, US Women's Open, Amundi Evian Championship, and the Augusta National Women's Amateur.

Last year, Melanie Green took home the trophy against Scotland's Lorna McClymont at Portmarnock. Previous winners include Leona Maguire, Celine Boutier, Georgia Hall, Anna Nordqvist, and Carlota Ciganda. Let's hope for a comeback next year for injured Talley!

Despite her recent misfortune, Asterisk Talley demonstrated her prowess in golf, particularly in the ShopRite LPGA Classic where she finished in a respectable 38th place. It's unfortunate that she won't be able to tee off at the Women's Amateur Championship this year due to a broken toe, as she was poised to showcase her skills at Nairn Golf Club, Scotland, just like she did at the Augusta National Women's Amateur, where she sunk an eagle at the first hole in the final round.
