Torrential Second Half: DFB Women Overpower Scotland 6-1 in Nations League

Women secure a significant victory scoring six goals within a quarter-hour in their match.

Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Email Print Copy Link Germany's women's national football team steamrolled Scotland in the Nations League, securing a lopsided 6-1 victory in a spellbinding second-half display. The team, coached by Christian Wueck, stumbled out of the gates and found themselves trailing early on but turned the tide with an explosive onslaught of goals.

The DFB women's team initially faltered, their performance lacking the spark that propelled them to a 4-0 victory in Dundee just four days prior. In a worrying display, the German squad surrendered a goal just before halftime to Caroline Weir, leaving them trailing 1-0 at the break.

But the tide quickly turned in the second half as hat-trick hero Selina Cerci and substitute Giovanna Hoffmann spearheaded an offensive surge, scoring five more goals in just 16 minutes to secure a convincing victory. The highlight came in the form of a stunning goal from Laura Freigang, who tapped in with a miraculous heel kick.

The victory marks Germany's third win in four Nations League games as they continue their march towards the Euro tournament in Switzerland (2-27 July). Away to the Netherlands (30 May) in Bremen and a clash with Austria (3 June) in Vienna still lie ahead for Wueck's team.

Curse of the Retired: Wueck's squad stumbles out of the gate

[Open Warning: Slightly heavy, pessimistic tone]

Wueck expressed dissatisfaction with his team's performance in Dundee, particularly during the clumsy phases in the first half. It's unlikely he would have been pleased with their shaky start in Wolfsburg before the break either.

Following the retirements of Almuth Schult and Lina Magull, the DFB team struggled to regain their form. Wueck opted to shake up his starting lineup, giving Freigang and Cerci more opportunities on offense, and handing a start to Sydney Lohmann. However, the newcomers failed to click and Lohmann made an early mistake, perhaps setting the tone for a rocky first half.

It took less than a minute for Ann-Katrin Berger to be called into action, stretching to save a shot on goal by Weir after Lohmann's loss of possession. Berger found herself tested repeatedly in the following minutes as inaccuracies and mistakes characterized the German game before the break.

Gaping Defense: Scotland Capitalizes

Wueck's team started to show signs of improvement after half an hour, but their defense remained vulnerable. Scotland seized their moment to strike, with Berger letting a seemingly harmless shot rebound too centrally, and Weir capitalizing in the follow-up, exposing the porous German defense.

Wueck sought to raise the team's game against the plucky Scottish underdogs. However, he could only be delighted with their response after the interval: Hoffmann hit the post and Cerci equalized with a header from a corner, setting the stage for a dominant German performance and an incredible turnaround.
