Women in commodities: Breaking barriers in a male-dominated industry
Maryana Yarmolenko Stober, president of Wista Switzerland, is spearheading the first International Commodities Show. The event, co-organized with Mathilde de Mareuil, aims to inspire young students to enter the male-dominated commodities industry, where women face significant challenges and underrepresentation.
Wista International, a global organization supporting women in leadership roles within the commodities sector, is at the forefront of this initiative. Founded by Sarah von Berswordt-Wallrabe, Wista now boasts 62 national chapters, including Wista Switzerland, established in 2009 with around 200 members.
Maryana Stober, who moved from Ukraine to Geneva 17 years ago for a job in agribusiness trading, believes that networks like Wista can make a difference in achieving gender equality in the short term. She wants to recruit more male members into Wista to foster an open platform for discussing gender equality. The commodities industry, known for its long hours and fierce competition, presents unique challenges for mothers, contributing to the underrepresentation of women in executive positions and significant pay gaps.
The International Commodities Show, set to inspire young students to pursue careers in the sector, is a testament to Wista's commitment to promoting gender equality. By encouraging open dialogue and supporting women in leadership roles, Wista is working towards a more balanced future in the commodities industry.
