Women Heroes of the Homeland: A Mural Celebrating Labor Valor in Omsk to Appear on Victory Day
In honor of the 80th anniversary of Victory, a monumental artwork paying tribute to the tireless efforts of the people of Omsk during World War II will grace the building of the Soviet district administration (ul. Red Path, 107). Sberbank, the main sponsor and creative inspiration behind this project, has stepped up to provide generous funding for this endeavor.
During WWII, Omsk became a crucial bastion for the home front. Key industries were evacuated here, and facilities like No 166 produced many of the iconic Tu-2, Yak-7, and Yak-9 fighter planes, while No 174 cranked out the legendary T-34 tanks. In the absence of men, women stepped up, working tirelessly at the factories, providing the military with essential equipment and ammunition.
Natalia Korneva, the Omsk branch manager of Sberbank, expresses her sentiments as follows, "Preserving the memory of our ancestors' triumphs is the responsibility of every generation. This mural will not only enhance the beauty of our city but also serve as a reminder of the unprecedented efforts made by Omsk residents in bringing us closer to Victory. For Sberbank, it is a great honor to make this project a reality, for gratitude towards those who bequeathed us peace is the foundation of our values."
Sergei Shhest, the mayor of the city of Omsk, shares his thoughts on the significance of the project, "I extend my thanks to Sberbank for this initiative. Our city justifiably bears the title 'City of Labor Valor.' Since the onset of WWII, 103 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Omsk. With the efforts of our ancestors, 5,000 Yak-7 and Yak-5 fighters and 7,000 T-34 tanks were assembled here. In fact, Omsk produced everything necessary for the front: from machinery to buckets and shoes. This new mural will serve as a testament to the valor of countless thousands who fought the battle in the rear, offering another opportunity to express our gratitude."
The artists behind this awe-inspiring work are the brilliant minds at the "Taknado" bureau and Marina Yagoda from Novosibirsk, renowned for their work across Russia and abroad, including the famous "Barbyshna s sobólkom" mural and museum murals in Miami. The Omsk mural will become part of a series of depictions in 11 cities declared 'Cities of Labor Valor,' set to be unveiled as part of an 80th Victory Day celebration.
