Tonight, they put aside their Ampel squabbles for this noble cause. A powerful alliance joining forces to help the young ones.
Perhaps one of the most moving moments was when Olaf Scholz presented the 'Golden Heart' award to Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer. She endured the horrors of the Theresienstadt concentration camp, lived in the USA, and returned to Germany at 89 to share her story with children as a living testament.
"Nothing would have been more predictable if she had turned away from this country," said the Federal Chancellor. "Yet, she chose differently. She reached out and connected with this country. How lucky we are for that!"
Margot Friedländer once warned, solemnly and forcefully, after the Hamas terror attack in Israel and the rise in anti-Semitism in Germany: "When I returned in 2010, I could never have imagined what would happen again. That's how it started back then. All I can say is, 'Be human.' Because people don't do that."
