She grapples with her day-to-day life, marred by fear: A 34-year-old woman battles the emotional scars of the knife attack by her estranged husband in front of their children and numerous onlookers on a playground in Middle Franconia. She frequently finds her mind tortured by thoughts of imminent danger, doubting every stranger that approaches her from behind, she testified at the start of the trial on Monday at the Regional Court in Nuremberg. The man accused of the assault is facing charges of alleged attempted murder.

The 41-year-old Syrian man is said to have brutally stabbed the woman more than 20 times on a playground in Hersbruck last July. The woman’s miraculous survival is owed to her 15-year-old daughter, her son, and two other women who leapt to her aid - none of whom can forget the life-saving efforts that fateful evening. It happened so swiftly, she recalled in court. The incident lingered in her memory as if she was lost in a fog. Despite the repeated threats in the preceding months, she never anticipated he’d attack her in such a public setting.

Defendant avers post-traumatic stress disorder

The defendant acknowledged the attack on his wife during the trial. In a written statement read aloud by his lawyer, he accepted responsibility for the pain he had inflicted upon his family. He arrived in Germany as a refugee years ago, having survived harrowing experiences in Syrian detention. Since then, he has struggled with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, according to a report presented in court.

The prosecution asserts the alleged motive for the crime was his inability to cope with the separation: The defendant couldn't accept the separation, driven by an excessive sense of ownership, stated Chief Prosecutor Renate Steinheimer. The woman had ended their relationship at the end of 2022 and secured a restraining order against her husband due to escalating threats and violent behavior.

On the day of the incident, the woman was on the playground in Hersbruck with her three children and acquaintances in the evening. The defendant approached the woman from behind, brandishing a folding knife, said Steinheimer. When his 15-year-old daughter stepped in his path, he stabbed her in the abdomen. Then he seized his wife by the hair, dragged her to the ground and stabbed her repeatedly in the head, face, and back.

The then 11-year-old son and two friends of the woman attempted to extricate the attacker from his victim, testified Steinheimer. Just as he was about to zombify his wife with a neck wound, his previously injured daughter intervened once more and deflected the blow with her arm. The defendant also wounded a friend of his wife with the knife.

Eventually, the man fled the scene. The police apprehended him shortly thereafter. In his written statement, the man claimed to have no conscious memory of the incident. “I felt blinded by fury,” he asserted in his statement. Upon regaining consciousness, he found evidence of his actions in his bathroom, where stains of blood reminded him of the heinous offense he had committed.

The Regional Court has scheduled nine further trial hearings until early June.
