Wolfgang Joop's Retrospective: A Journey Through Art and Fashion

A retrospective exhibition of Wolfgang Joop, the renowned German fashion designer and artist, is set to open in Potsdam's Kunstraum from October 4 to November 18, 2023. The exhibition, curated by Joop's partner Edwin Lemberg, spans 450 square meters and six thematic areas, offering a brave and unique blend of art and fashion.

The exhibition, titled 'Wolfgang Joop: A Life in Art and Fashion', is an emotional journey through Joop's career, featuring his early paintings, including Flemish still lifes and baroque putti, which predate his fashion career. The show also includes his iconic fashion collections, images, and sculptures, showcasing recurring motifs like angels and apes.

Joop, who will turn 81 during the exhibition, sees it as a review of his past rather than a glimpse into his future. The exhibition was originally planned to coincide with his 80th birthday last year but was postponed several times. Despite feeling nervous about the exhibition, Joop is excited to share his life's work with his hometown of Potsdam.

After its run in Potsdam, the exhibition may travel to other cities, although no specific plans have been announced. Joop, considered one of Germany's most successful fashion designers, having worked with top models like Nadja Auermann and Claudia Schiffer, hopes that this retrospective will inspire and connect with visitors, offering a unique perspective on his multifaceted career.
