In Panschwitz-Kuckau, located within Bautzen's district, a wolf has wreaked havoc among the local sheep population. Last Sunday afternoon, the predator claimed the lives of five out of seven defenseless sheep, leaving one missing and another fortunately found later. Authorities confirmed the grim discovery due to a wolf kill expert's analysis, as reported on Monday.

Wolf sightings are no longer uncommon news in Germany. In fact, the country hosts various wolf populations, with a notable presence in Saxony. According to unspecified sources, Germany played host to around 184 wolf packs, 47 wolf pairs, and 22 solitary adult wolves in 2022-2023.

Although the population figures for branded states like Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, and Saxony are not provided, it's apparent that wolves are scattered even in regions beyond their traditional strongholds. This emerging trend might be attributed to wolves' remarkable ability to cover vast distances and establish extensive territories.

With their growing population and expanding habitats, the odds of wolf encounters in Germany increase, though such incidents remain rare and usually pose no threat to humans. This observation suggests that even with a flourishing wolf population, the number of wolves in individual regions remains manageable, although precisely tracking the population in specific areas might necessitate referring to recent wildlife management reports and conservation organizations for the most accurate and up-to-date figures.
