Woidke on AfD Classification: "Surprised Just Like Everyone Else"
Woidke expresses ignorance about AfD classification: 'I was as surprised as you' - Woidke's Response on AfD Labeling: "I Wasn't Aware Either"
Get the scoop on what's shaking in Brandenburg politics!
In the wake of the dismissal of the Brandenburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution's (Verfassungsschutz) head, Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) has expressed support for his Interior Minister, Katrin Lange. It turns out, Woidke was as in the dark about the new classification of the state AfD by the Verfassungsschutz as Lange!
"Bro, I was as clueless as a newborn squirrel! How could I possibly know if the Interior Minister wasn't in the loop. That's a head-scratcher!" Woidke tells the German Press Agency.
On April 14, 2025, the Verfassungsschutz slapped the state AfD with a 'securely right-wing extremist' label, a classification based on their ideologies and actions that target specific groups and go against the free democratic order. This bombshell was dropped on Lange only on May 5, 2025, creating quite the ruckus! Until then, the AfD state party in Brandenburg had been tagged as a 'suspicion case.'
"You can't do the tango without trust, it's the foundation of any relationship. Period," says Woidke, referring to the importance of trust in the cooperative relationship between him and the Verfassungsschutz. As for the new AfD classification, Woidke adds, "At the moment, I'm as in the dark as a bat in a cave, 'cause I ain't got a clue about the data and facts the Verfassungsschutz based their assessment on." But it's no secret that the AfD in Brandenburg has been headed in a more extremist direction over the past few years.
Behind the Scenes at Brandenburg's Verfassungsschutz
- Power Struggles: The Verfassungsschutz's decision to classify the state AfD as right-wing extremist has stirred up a hornet's nest, causing internal conflict within the party and among political groups in Brandenburg.
- Leadership Shakeup: Katrin Lange, the Interior Minister, wasn't too pleased with the delay in communication about the classification. So, she booted Jörg Müller, the head of the Verfassungsschutz, from his post.
- What's Next: The government may introduce measures to limit the public roles of AfD members, following the lead of other federal states in Germany. This could potentially affect civil servants, police officers, teachers, and soldiers.
- Public Opinion Shift: The classification could influence public opinion and political discourse, potentially impacting the government's approach to managing extremist groups and balancing free speech with public safety.
Brandenburg's political landscape has become a hotbed of political drama and debates about extremism and democratic governance, all thanks to the Verfassungsschutz's big move. Stay tuned for more!

- The dismissal of Jörg Müller, the head of Brandenburg's Verfassungsschutz, has been speculated to be related to his controversial decision to label the state AfD as 'securely right-wing extremist' rather than a 'suspicion case,' an action that has been perceived as an extremist stance by the AfD and some political groups in Brandenburg.
- The Brandenburg AfD's extremist policies and actions, targeting specific groups and going against the free democratic order, have been a source of concern for political parties such as the SPD, led by Dietmar Woidke, who has expressed his surprise at the classification and emphasized the importance of trust in relationships within politics and general news.
- The AfD's rising extremist tendencies and the subsequent brandenburg AfD classification by Verfassungsschutz have informed ongoing debates about policy and legislation related to the protection of the environment, democracy, and public safety, with potential implications for civil servants, police officers, teachers, soldiers, and political discourse in Brandenburg and beyond.
