Dietmar Woidke: Committed to Brandenburg 'Til the End
Woidke to remain in power throughout entire legislative term - Woidke to serve the full tenure of office.
Dietmar Woidke, the bloke running Brandenburg as Minister President, ain't planning on stepping down anytime soon. In a chat with the German Press Agency, he made it clear he's here to serve the whole term. "Promised the folks in Brandenburg I'd stick around if they gave the SPD the green light in the state election, and I aim to keep that promise," he said.
Woidke's been the SPD's state boss since taking over from Matthias Platzeck back in 2013, and after 11 years, he's one of the top three longest-serving government heads in the country, just below Reiner Haseloff (CDU) and Winfried Kretschmann (Greens).
Listening and Including Others
Woidke gets the gist of the demand from former Interior Minister Katrin Lange for more openness towards different viewpoints. "It's a hot topic going around these days, folks being way too black-and-white, and worse, shunning different opinions," he said. "Maybe we all have to remember to listen more and less about excluding each other to find solutions that work," he wisely suggested.
Lange had some issues with the state's chief of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Joerg Mueller, having criticized him for not informing her earlier about classifying the state AfD as a right-wing extremist project back in May. There was some controversy over it, and after some internal party troubles, Lange moved on. In an open letter to the party congress on Saturday, she called out her party buddies for backstabbing and saw a narrowing of opinion corridors within the SPD, on topics like Corona, the Ukraine war, and the AfD. Lange didn't throw her hat in the ring for a deputy state chair spot and skipped the party congress.
