WNBA Postseason: The Way Phoenix Mercury's Defense Halted New York Liberty, and the Implications for Game 3's Decisive Match

The New York Liberty are facing a challenging situation as they prepare for Game 3 of the playoffs against the Phoenix Mercury. The Liberty have been plagued by turnover issues all season, with a 17.3% turnover rate ranked seventh in the league.

In Game 2, these issues came to the forefront as the Liberty turned the ball over 15 times, resulting in 25 points for the Mercury. Star player Breanna Stewart managed just six points, two rebounds, and two assists, and had more turnovers (three) than made baskets (two).

The turnover problems could be a major concern for the Liberty in Game 3, especially with Stewart injured and the team playing on the road. It's unclear if Stewart will be significantly better by Game 3, and there are concerns that playing in Game 2 and traveling could make her knee feel worse.

The Liberty's struggles on offense were evident in Game 2, as they shot 30.2% from the field, turned the ball over 16 times, and didn't score more than 13 points in any of the final three quarters. They also struggled to score in the paint, managing 22 points, their third-fewest in a game this season.

The Mercury, on the other hand, have been impressive on defense this season, boasting the fourth-best opponent turnover rate (18.9%) and being tied for third in the league in steals per game (7.8). Their defensive-offensive concept, which emphasizes strong defense combined with efficient scoring, helped them win against the Liberty in Game 2. Key players like Satou Sabally and Alyssa Thomas, who delivered a historic triple-double in the postseason, were instrumental in this approach.

Liberty coach Sandy Brondello acknowledged the physicality of the Mercury as a challenge for Stewart, while Kahleah Copper of the Mercury expressed pride in the team's defensive performance. Jonquel Jones of the Liberty expressed concern about the team's execution and finding openings on offense.

The Liberty will have to travel back across the country for Game 3, which tips off in less than 48 hours. If Stewart isn't able to give the Liberty her usual production in Game 3, it could be a major problem for the reigning champs. The Mercury, with their balanced approach and strong defense, could continue to limit the Liberty’s scoring opportunities while capitalizing on their own offensive chances.
