The Fateful Night of the Tiger Attack: A Witness Remembers Siegfried & Roy
Dominic Armbruster from Fürth bore witness to the infamous tiger attack that abruptly ended the illustrious careers of the world-renowned magicians, Siegfried & Roy, in 2003. "I had a gut feeling something bad was gonna happen," she recalls.
Her husband, Detlef, had been captivated by Siegfried & Roy, calling them "fantastic magicians" and "the best in the world." The German-born duo was known for their awe-inspiring magic shows, complete with white tigers and lions, in Las Vegas. "We got to go there," Dominic said on the ARD podcast "Wild Crimes," in the episode titled "Siegfried & Roy and the Tiger Attack."
October 3, 2003, a night meant for celebration - Dominic's birthday surprise - turned into a night of terror. Her husband had booked front-row seats, directly next to the stage, for over 1000 euros. However, the lack of a barrier heightened Dominic's anxiety, fearing the large cats might jump into the audience at any moment.
The show featured spellbinding illusions, such as tigers disappearing in the fog and reappearing elsewhere. Yet, Dominic's worry overshadowed the spectacle. After 45 minutes, the incident unfolded during the "The Rapport" segment, where Roy and the tiger were meant to demonstrate their bond by kissing. Dominic described the duo as "flustered" and recalls something seemed off before the attack. Mantacore, the towering tiger, stood on its hind legs and lunged at Roy, biting him and pulling him to the ground.
Roy survived but endured severe injuries. Despite his injuries, he continued to defend Mantacore, stating that the tiger was trying to save him from a stroke. However, this explanation has been met with skepticism. The details surrounding the tiger's behavior remain a mystery, with animal behavior experts and witnesses offering different interpretations.
Siegfried & Roy attributed the incident to an accident. Their former animal trainer, Chris Lawrence, suggested a strained relationship between Roy and Mantacore caused the attack. However, the duo denied these claims. Roy passed away in 2020, and Siegfried in 2021, although their legacy as entertainers continues to captivate audiences.
