Witness: 17-year-old Croatian Cricket Talent Crushes English Bowler's Delivery for a Six upon Signing with County Academy
Seventeen-year-old Zach Vukosic, the Croatian international cricketer, delivered a splendid counter-attack in a T20 Blast warm-up fixture this week, dispatched a six off former England white-ball bowler David Willey to secure Somerset's win.
Playing against Northants' second XIs, the two teams were fielding their regular first XI players for the forthcoming T20 Blast this week. With the scoreboard reading 114 for Northants after their collapse, Somerset stumbled to 61-6 in the 13th over. This is where Vukosic, who is part of Somerset Academy, stepped up. Last year, he struck his maiden century for Exeter in Devon's premier division, and he made his T20I debut for Croatia against Belgium, scoring a half-century.
In a commendable show of determination, Vukosic scored 36 off 23 balls, featuring five boundaries, to propel Somerset over the line. One of those boundaries was a pulled six off Willey, who could only watch the ball sail over the leg side boundary.
Willey, who retired from international cricket at the end of the 2023 World Cup, represented England in 113 white-ball internationals, taking 151 wickets. He is currently the captain of Northants in the T20 Blast, having returned to his boyhood club from Yorkshire in 2022.
Both Somerset and Northants will kick off their T20 Blast campaigns on Friday, May 30, with Somerset facing Surrey, and Northants taking on Yorkshire. The full squads for each T20 Blast team can be found here.
