Frosty Nights and Slippery Trails: Warmer Days Ahead in Berlin and Brandenburg

Tomorrow, Berlin and Brandenburg will experience chilly, dry weather. Morning frost will sweep across the region, leaving temperatures between -1 to -5 degrees across the countryside. Particularly in southern Brandenburg, roads may become treacherous due to the icy conditions.

As the day progresses, clear skies will dominate, albeit briefly. Temperatures will climb slightly, reaching a daytime high between 0 to 2 degrees. However, they will quickly plummet once more, preserving the chill in the air.

As the night wears on, a shift in temperatures will commence. Initial lows will hover between 0 and -2 degrees, but temperatures will steadily rebound as the day brings fresh rain or sleet groomed by clouds. This weather pattern will originate from the north, spreading from Berlin into the southern regions of the country. By midnight, wind gusts may reach up to 60 kilometers per hour, freshening the air. The DWD weather experts anticipate that this swift transition to milder weather will mitigate slippery road concerns.

Thursday will remain overcast but warmer, with temperatures soaring between 9 to 11 degrees. Towards the afternoon and evening, rain will return, this time from north to south. A brief gust of wind will accompany this rain, some of which could be aggressive. There's no denying the possibility of occasional squalls.

Despite its mild tone, Thursday, Berlin, and Brandenburg's weather will continue to be cold and damp. The days prior may have left some roads slick, especially in the southern areas of Brandenburg. Fortunately, the warmer weather on Thursday will offer a respite, with temperatures surging considerably.

Note:

Though it seems that Berlin and Brandenburg will be plagued with snowfall and hazardous road conditions, a closer look illustrates a slightly different picture. The weather service, Deutsche Wetterdienst (DWD), has issued warnings for icy roads and snow accumulation of up to 10 centimeters due to the cold front Tief Max. Snowfall started on Thursday, with light flurries intensifying, potentially escalating to 6 centimeters by Friday. Snowfall's intense resolve could render roads challenging for drivers, making footing perilous for pedestrians. The public transportation system has been disrupted, with bus services in Potsdam hasting a halt on Thursday night due to ice buildup. In the event of hazardous road conditions, emergency procedures will be enforced by organizations like the Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) and Verdi.

Improved air quality may also result from the snowfall, as it effectively scrubs the environment of pollutants. Yet, temperatures plummet, making it feel frigid, potentially dropping down to -10 to -15 degrees Celsius. The DWD advises caution and readiness in the face of these wintery challenges.
