Winter weather in Thuringia proved to be quite treacherous over the weekend, leading to numerous emergencies and mishaps on the roads.

Police operations in the region were heavily focused on traffic-related incidents, with most of their efforts spent on resolving collision after collision. In contrast to southern Germany, which grappled with heavy snowfall, Thuringia saw a manageable amount of snow, as stated by a spokesperson for the state police operations center on Sunday.

Railroad misfortune

On Sunday morning, a truck with a trailer became a victim of the icy conditions after it crashed into the noise barrier beside a railroad line between Weimar and Apolda. The accident forced the closure of the railroad line for several hours, and luckily, no one suffered any injuries.

Lost and found

A 21-year-old woman from the Greiz district found herself in trouble on Saturday when she spun out of control on a snow-covered road between Auma and Braunsdorf. Ignoring the police, she crawled away from the scene of the accident without reporting it. The police utilized the automatic emergency call system timeously integrated into the woman's vehicle, which automatically notified the rescue coordination center of the crash.

A chain reaction of property damage events in Schöndorf near Weimar took place when a 26-year-old woman's car slid off the icy road and collided with two parked cars. The accident caused those parked vehicles to collide with another parked car, resulting in property damage amounting to 7000 euros.

Helping hands on the road

In Galldersdorf and Herschdorf in the Ilm district, a 41-year-old man swerved to avoid a fox on the icy road on Saturday evening. But instead of avoiding the creature, he ended up in a ditch with his damaged vehicle. Thankfully, he and the fox emerged unscathed.

Police didn't just rescue drivers from the icy roads - they also came to the aid of a skier who had lost his way in Suhl-Gehlberg. The 48-year-old man was found exhausted but unharmed by the police and their network of volunteers.

Traffic woe in other districts

Six accidents occurred on slippery roads in the Nordhausen district between Friday and Sunday morning, causing property damage exceeding 10,000 euros. Luckily, nobody was hurt.

In Auma, a 34-year-old woman miscalculated her speed on a bend in Luisenthal, (Gotha district) and collided with another car, resulting in slight injuries and an estimated damage of 15,000 euros.

The milder weather conditions in north Germany prevented the traffic disruptions that southern Germany faced, with heavy snowfall and train/flight cancellations.
