So much snow is expected to fall in the Southwest - Winter Storm to Disrupt Travel in Southern Germany This Weekend
A cold front is set to sweep across southern Germany, bringing wintry weather to the Black Forest and the Allgäu region. Travel disruption and hazardous conditions are expected as snow, strong winds, and icy surfaces develop over the weekend.
The wintry spell will begin with snow struggling to settle at first. By the afternoon, however, conditions will worsen as temperatures drop. Intermittent snowfall is forecast overnight into Sunday, particularly near Lake Constance and across the Allgäu.
Higher elevations will see the heaviest snow. Above 1,000 meters in mountainous areas, up to 15 centimetres could accumulate. Between 600 and 800 meters, around five centimetres of fresh snow may fall by evening. Strong wind gusts are also expected at higher altitudes, adding to the difficulties. Roads and pathways will become slippery, creating hazardous travel conditions. Previous winters have shown how severe weather can disrupt transport. In January 2023, heavy snowfall in the Black Forest led to multi-day closures of major roads like the B317 and B500, as well as railway lines. Similarly, in February 2024, gusts over 100 km/h in the Allgäu caused motorway shutdowns on the A7 and A8, flight cancellations at Memmingen Airport, and reduced visitor numbers in ski resorts.
The incoming weather will bring snow, strong winds, and icy roads to the region. Residents and travellers should prepare for difficult conditions, with potential delays and closures on key routes. Previous severe winter events have resulted in significant transport disruptions and economic losses.
