Winter storm forces school closures across eight Sinaloa municipalities
Schools in eight Sinaloa municipalities will remain closed as a severe winter storm hits the region. The decision comes after the state’s education authority warned of snow, sleet, and heavy rain across parts of western Mexico. Nearly 586,000 students were due to return to classrooms on Monday following the holiday break.
On January 12, 2026, the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) of Sinaloa ordered the suspension of lessons in Angostura, Culiacán, Badiraguato, Cosalá, Mocorito, Navolato, Mazatlán, and Sinaloa municipality. The move followed warnings from the Civil Protection Agency about extreme weather conditions as students prepared to resume classlink activities.
Areas near the borders of Chihuahua and Durango, particularly Badiraguato and San Ignacio, face the highest risk of snow or sleet. Mountainous regions are expected to bear the brunt of the storm, while widespread rain is forecast across the rest of the state.
The closure affects thousands of pupils in basic education. Authorities have urged families to stay updated on weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel. Schools will reopen once conditions are deemed safe for students and staff.
