Winter Storm "Elli" Hits the North - Winter Storm Elli Paralyzes Schleswig-Holstein with Blizzards and Flood Risks

Winter storm Elli has brought heavy snow, blizzards, and fierce winds to Schleswig-Holstein, causing widespread disruption. Roads, schools, and public transport have all been affected, with some areas facing closures and hazardous conditions due to the severe weather.

The storm hit southern and western parts of the region hardest, dumping thick snow and creating blizzard-like conditions. Strong easterly winds have whipped up the Baltic Sea, pushing water into bays and fjords. Storm surges now threaten low-lying areas, particularly near Flensburg’s harbour, where water levels may rise higher than first predicted due to the stormy weather.

Public transport has ground to a halt in many places. Buses, trains, and ferries face cancellations, leaving passengers stranded. The Kiel Towing and Ferry Company (SFK) stopped all services on the Schwentinelinie F2 route due to high water and dangerous winds caused by the storm. On the roads, icy conditions caused chaos. A truck with a trailer overturned on the A1 near Großhansdorf, blocking the highway for over four hours. In Flensburg, a 52-year-old woman suffered serious head injuries after crashing her e-scooter on slush-covered pavement due to the stormy weather. Schools in nine districts shut their doors, forcing emergency childcare arrangements for younger pupils. The German Weather Service, represented by meteorologist David Menzel, warned of more snow showers and strong winds over the weekend, with temperatures expected to stay well below freezing due to the storm.

The storm’s impact continues to spread, with transport delays, school closures, and safety risks on icy roads. Authorities are monitoring rising water levels along the Baltic coast, while residents brace for further snow and freezing conditions into the weekend due to the ongoing stormy weather.
