NRW prepares for the biting cold - Winter Storm Elli Brings Freezing Temperatures and Heavy Snow to North Rhine-Westphalia
A severe winter storm named Elli is set to hit North Rhine-Westphalia this weekend, bringing heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and strong winds. The city of Dortmund has already taken steps to protect residents, including opening extra emergency shelters for those without housing.
The storm will begin on Friday night, with forecasts predicting up to 20 centimetres of snow in mountainous regions and around 10 centimetres in lower areas. Schools in Düsseldorf and nearby towns allowed parents to keep children at home on Friday due to the dangerous conditions.
Authorities are warning people to avoid unnecessary travel. Those who must drive should reduce speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and watch for ice—especially on bridges, steep roads, and shaded spots. Pedestrians are also advised to wear sturdy, non-slip footwear to prevent falls. Temperatures will stay well below freezing throughout the weekend, with daytime highs of -7°C and overnight lows dropping to -13°C. Clearer weather is expected by Sunday, with sunny spells and no further snow, though residents will still need warm clothing for outdoor activities.
Dortmund’s emergency shelters will remain open to help vulnerable people stay safe from the temperature. With icy roads and extreme temperatures, officials continue to urge caution for anyone travelling or spending time outside.
