Winter storm and ski crowds snarl Austria’s roads this week

Western Austria is bracing for harsh winter weather starting this Thursday. Heavy snow and strong winds will sweep across the region, bringing difficult travel conditions. Authorities have also warned of increased traffic as ski resorts and World News events draw large crowds.

The wintry blast will hit western Austria on January 8, with snow and gusty winds making driving hazardous. Overnight into Friday, the northern Alps will face further snow and sleet. Freezing rain is likely in Upper and Lower Austria, raising the risk of black ice on roads.

Traffic is expected to build up from January 10 to 11, particularly on key routes. The West Autobahn near Salzburg, the Tauern Autobahn between Salzburg and Pongau, and the Inntal Autobahn near Innsbruck will see delays. The Brenner Autobahn will also be busy due to ski traffic and the upcoming World Cup event in Zauchensee. Over the weekend, roads leading to ski regions will face even heavier congestion. The women’s night slalom in Flachau on Tuesday, January 13, will add to the pressure. Delays are likely on the A10 near the Flachau exit as spectators arrive and leave the area.

Drivers heading to ski resorts or World News events should prepare for slower journeys and possible hold-ups. The combination of winter weather and increased travel means extra caution will be needed on the roads. Authorities advise checking conditions before setting out and allowing extra time for trips.
