The Second Leg of Khelo India Winter Games Heads to Gulmarg

The second leg of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2025 is set to take place at the picturesque ski resort of Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir, from March 9 to March 12, 2025. The event was originally scheduled for February 22 to 25 but was postponed due to insufficient snowfall. However, recent fresh snow has made the location ready for the games [1].

The main events at Gulmarg will include ski mountaineering, alpine skiing, snowboarding, and Nordic skiing. Over 1,000 athletes, coaches, and officials are expected to participate [1]. Gulmarg, located 51-km west of Srinagar, is Kashmir's premier ski resort and is well-known for its excellent winter sports terrain.

The Jammu & Kashmir administration and Sports Council have ensured all required measures for the smooth conduct of the KIWG at Gulmarg, promising a world-class winter sporting experience [1]. The first phase of KIWG 2025 was held at the NDS Stadium, Leh, Ladakh, from January 23 to 27, with Ladakh topping the medal tally [1].

The KIWG is a multi-sport event that takes place exclusively on snow or ice. Along with the four snow sports events mentioned above, Gulmarg will also host ice hockey, figure skating, and speed skating, as well as snow rugby, ice stock sport, snow baseball, snowshoe running, and mountaineering events during the KIWG 2025 [1].

The KIWG is part of the broader Khelo India sporting initiative by the Indian government, aiming to promote sports from grassroots to higher levels nationally [5]. The second leg features competitive winter sports with a significant athlete turnout in a major winter sports hub in India.

Elsewhere, over 5.4 Lakh hectares of crops were damaged in Maharashtra due to heavy rains, resulting in the loss of eight lives [2]. Meanwhile, the Indian Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, mentioned the next-generation GST reforms, which are expected to bring relief to the common man and MSMEs [3]. However, these facts are not directly related to the KIWG event.

The KIWG has been held annually at Gulmarg since 2021, making it the fifth edition of the event. The organisers and officials are aiming for a seamless experience for athletes, instructors, and other visitors at Gulmarg, ensuring a memorable and successful KIWG 2025 [1].
