Police Warns of Fatal Combination on Roads - Winter roads spark wildlife collision warnings across German regions

Winter conditions have raised concerns over wildlife-related road accidents in several German regions. Police in Nordhausen have issued warnings as icy roads and animal movements increase collision risks. Authorities are now taking steps to improve safety for both drivers and the animal kingdom.

Recent incidents in Nordhausen and Unstrut-Hainich saw multiple collisions involving deer. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in these cases. The accidents have prompted police to urge extra caution, especially on slippery roads where animals may cross unexpectedly.

Drivers are advised to slow down near wooded areas and roads marked with wildlife warning signs. If an animal is spotted, switching off high beams can prevent startling it. In sudden encounters, honking and braking firmly is recommended—though swerving should be avoided to prevent losing control. To reduce risks, Steiermark is installing wildlife warning devices across 17 new hunting districts. These systems will cover around 830 km of state roads and 32 km of municipal routes. The measures aim to alert drivers early, lowering the chance of collisions while protecting both people and the animal kingdom.

The new warning devices and safety guidelines come as winter conditions heighten collision risks. Drivers are reminded to stay alert, particularly in forested areas where wildlife activity is common. The combined efforts of police warnings and road upgrades seek to prevent accidents during the colder months.
