"Winter Predictions Made Bold by Farmers' Almanac for New York City: 'Calm, Frost, Repeat'"
The Farmers' Almanac, a trusted source for weather forecasts since its inception over two centuries ago, has released predictions for the upcoming season. For New York City residents, the forecast suggests a cooler-than-normal fall this year. However, the complete winter weather forecast for the 2021-2022 season will only be revealed in the 2026 edition of the Almanac.
The Almanac lists 20 signs of a harsh winter, based on traditional weather lore and animal behavior. Some of these signs include thicker-than-normal onion skins or corn husks, woodpeckers sharing a tree, the early arrival of the snowy owl, and squirrels gathering nuts early. Other signs include the size of the orange band on the woolly bear caterpillar, which can indicate the severity of the upcoming winter, and frequent halos or rings around the sun or moon, which forecast numerous snowfalls.
The Almanac's weather forecast formula takes into account celestial events, various meteorological conditions, solar activity, the motion of the Moon, and other factors. According to the Almanac, NYC will be near the season's coldest temperatures, but not directly in the cold zone (from the Northern Plains to New England). However, the forecast suggests that New Yorkers and other Atlantic Coast residents can expect significant rain, mixing with snow, but not as much snowfall as New England and the Mid-Atlantic region.
While the Almanac does not provide specific details about the winter weather forecast for NYC in 2021-2022, it does warn that some parts of the country could see wintery weather as early as September. The Almanac claims to be 80% accurate in its weather forecasts, making it a popular guide for anticipating harsh winter conditions.
In the meantime, New Yorkers can enjoy the return of the 'Nightmare Before Christmas' light trail at the New York Botanical Garden, and explore the beauty of a Connecticut beach with sandy shores and a 2.5-mile seaside walking loop, which is one of the best near NYC.
