Winter crops across the EU generally holding up well, according to latest reports
Heavy rains in north-west France impact crops, while Europe, Ukraine, Turkey, and Maghreb face diverse weather challenges
January 2022 brought heavy rainfall to north-western France, negatively affecting crop development due to potential waterlogging and erosion, but specific data for this period is not widely available. In contrast, central and eastern Europe experience relatively cold winters and are less susceptible to heavy rainfall during January, although still vulnerable to its detrimental effects. Ukraine's winter months, being amongst the coldest, typically see infrequent heavy rains, reducing their impact on crops. Climate dynamics differ in Turkey, with northern regions potentially experiencing negative effects similar to north-western France, while southern regions remain relatively unaffected due to their milder winter climate. The Maghreb region, including countries like Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, generally experiences mild winters, and heavy rainfall could adversely impact crops through flooding and erosion, with specific impacts dependent on the region's agricultural practices and crop types.
While those regions have faced various weather challenges, south-eastern Turkey has been in a persistent water deficit since late December, which may brought concerns about the sustainability of the water reservoirs throughout the season. Drought has again thwarted expectations for yield in the western and central Maghreb.

The persistent water deficit in south-eastern Turkey could pose a security risk to the sustainability of their water reservoirs during the season. In the Maghreb region, heavy rainfall could potentially impact food sustainability through flooding and erosion, particularly in regions with agricultural practices and crop types that are susceptible to these conditions.
