Winter weather slows down rail traffic in Central Germany - Winter chaos derails train travel across eastern Germany
Harsh winter weather has caused major disruptions to train services across Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. Heavy snow and freezing temperatures have left passengers facing delays, cancellations and rerouted journeys.
Erfurt, a crucial rail hub, has been hit especially hard by the icy conditions. Many switches have frozen, making them unusable and leading to widespread delays. The S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland network is severely affected, with every line experiencing problems.
The routes between Erfurt and Leipzig, Erfurt and Halle, as well as the Naumburg–Leipzig (S6) service, are facing the worst issues. Trains are running late, some have been cancelled, and others are being diverted via Naumburg. The Erfurt–Coburg line is also struggling, with reduced speeds causing significant hold-ups. Passengers travelling in the region should expect continued disruption as freezing temperatures persist.
The ongoing winter conditions mean delays and cancellations will likely continue for travellers in the area. Rail operators are advising passengers to check for updates before starting their journeys. Alternative routes and extended travel times remain in place for many services.
