Winnipeg Jets: A Battle for Away Success in the 2025 Playoffs
Winnipeg Jets player Mark Scheifele expresses urgency for the team to extend their playoff run in Dallas.
The Winnipeg Jets are on the verge of acing an elusive task. Heading to Dallas for Game 6, their series against the Dallas Stars hangs in the balance, with the Jets trailing 3-2 and devoid of recent victories on enemy ice.
Down and out on the road during the playoffs, the Jets have lost all their away games this year and nine straight stretchbacks to 2023. "We gotta approach this like it's Game 7, dress with that desperation, and give it our all to claw our way back in front of our home crowd again," highlighted Jets center Mark Scheifele at the Winnipeg airport.
The Jets have been drubbed 25-8 on the road during the post-season, and their star goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck, has been far from stellar away from home. He's been yanked in three road games during the first-round series against St. Louis and enters Dallas with a 5.84 goals-against average and .793 save percentage away from home.
New head coach Scott Arniel is confident that his players won't be obsessed with their road struggles. "Every streak comes to an end, whether it's a good one or a bad one. We're planning to put an end to this on Saturday."
The Jets faltered in Game 3 in Dallas, then fought back gamely in Game 4 but lost 3-1. However, their recent effort amplified by their 4-0 home victory in Game 5 offers hope for the next challenge.
In response to the question about the team's change of fortune, Scheifele grinned and said, "Guess we just have a good team. That desperation can fire you up, so I'm proud of this bunch."
Scheifele opened scoring with a goal that took a quirky bounce off forwards Wyatt Johnston and Thomas Harley's skates. "Sometimes it takes an unconventional route to get the job done, and this one proved crucial. Hopefully, we can replicate that in Dallas."
The Jets won the Presidents' Trophy this year with a franchise-record 56 victories and 116 points in the regular season. They're striving to advance to the conference final for the first time since 2018, when they succumbed to the Vegas Golden Knights in five games.
Meanwhile, Dallas forward Jamie Benn was fined $5,000 for roughing Scheifele in the third period of the previous game, catching Scheifele off guard. "It was all a blur, and my face still hurts. Not much I can really say about this situation," Scheifele humorlessly added.
