Adrie de Vries guided Switsch to a third-place finish on the 1600-meter course, while Penalty, the clear favorite, missed the podium, finishing fourth under Thore Hammer-Hansen. The crowd of 15,500 spectators witnessed the triumph unfold without much surprise from Mendizabal, who attributed Short Final's win to the horse's prowess. "He's a very worthy mount, and today's victory was an easy one for us," said the jockey.
Short Final is trained by Satoshi Kobayashi in Paris and co-owned by Kobayashi and Sylvie Allouche. The three-day spring meeting continues on Saturday with the Derby-Trial and concludes on Sunday with the Grand Prix.
