Winners of the Richard-Martin Prize share their experiences: "Established credibility, consistent work contracts"

In tribute to the iconic photographer Richard Martin, who once graced the pages of L'Équipe, the photo contest was launched. Richard Martin, a renowned figure in the world of sports photography, passed away from cancer in July 2020 at the age of 54.

The contest, co-founded by François Gille and Franck Seguin, former photo editors of L'Équipe, aims to honour Martin's legacy by providing a platform for aspiring photographers to showcase their talent.

One such aspiring photographer is Bilal Aouffen, who fully launched his freelance photography activity in 2024. Aouffen's unique perspective was evident when he captured runners and the crowd from above, knocking on a nearby building's door for permission. His nearly famous photo of cyclists racing down Rue Lepic during the Paris Games was a testament to his skill.

In the inaugural year of the contest, Étienne Garnier emerged as the winner. Garnier, who dedicates his win to the photo service, sees it as personal and collective recognition. For Hadrien Sohy, who won the amateur contest in 2022, the award is a step to build confidence and define his photographic identity.

Agathe Monier, who won the amateur contest in the previous year, captured a photo of Rafael Nadal on the clay courts of Roland-Garros. This lucky capture allowed her to obtain accreditations easily and she will soon be a member of the jury for the new edition of the L'Équipe photo contest.

The golden rule for the photo contest is to capture any kind of sport. The fifth edition of the contest will close on October 31st, providing another opportunity for aspiring photographers to pay homage to Richard Martin and potentially win recognition for their work.

Bilal Aouffen, despite coming second in a previous year, continues to strive for success. His passion for sports photography, like that of Richard Martin, is evident in every frame he captures. The L'Équipe photo contest serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Martin and the continued passion for sports photography.
