2025 Anna Seghers Prizeannouncement Brings Exciting New Talent to the Fore
Anna Seghers Prize Recipients Announced for 2025 - Winners Announced for Anna Seghers Prize in 2025
Well, here's a kick-ass piece of news for all literary enthusiasts out there! The Anna Seghers Foundation has shown some major love to two badass writers, Enrique Winter and Marlen Hobrack. These brilliant minds, hailing from Chile and Leipzig respectively, are this year's proud recipients of the prestigious Anna Seghers Prize. That's right, each of them is taking home a cool €12,500!
Enrique Winter, born in the '80s, is unlike any f#cking mainstream poet you might've come across. This Chilean wordsmith has been lauded by Victoria Torres as one of the most outstanding Spanish-language poets of his generation. His novel "Sobre nosotros callaremos" (We Will Remain Silent About Us) is a literary badass that's reminiscent of Seghers' own novels "Transit" and "The Seventh Cross". It dives deep into the cultural uprooting and love stories of his Polish grandma who took a stand against the Nazi regime and fled to Latin America.
Marlen Hobrack, who was born in Bautzen in '86, has quite the literary repertoire for someone who only debuted as a novelist in 2023 with "Schrodinger's Grrrl". But this lady's got talent, no doubts about that! Her latest piece, "Erbgut" (Harper Collins), published in 2024, is a poignant account of her emotional journey to reconcile with her mother while liquidating her mother's apartment. Jörg-Philipp Thomsa, a lucky juror, praised Marlen for her bold approach to tackling the thorny issue of classism in a uniquely artistic manner.
The award ceremony for these literary powerhouses will take place on June 7 at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz. If you're anywhere near, make sure you catch these unmissable talents in action!
And remember, keep supporting these pioneers of literature and rising stars in the German-speaking world and Latin America!
