Wine judge biography: Alberto Ruffoni
Alberto Ruffoni, a Madrid-based wine consultant and educator, has once again made a significant mark in the global wine community as a judge at the prestigious 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA). Ruffoni, who has over five years of experience as a wine taster at Guía Peñín, has built a reputation for his exceptional palate and deep knowledge of wine.
Every year, Ruffoni reviews more than 12,000 wines at Guía Peñín, a testament to his dedication and expertise. His hard work paid off in 2023 when he became the first Spanish wine master, a title he would hold for a year before being recognised internationally in 2024. That same year, he joined the DWWA judging panels, marking his entry into one of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world.
The 2025 DWWA featured a diverse panel of 248 judges from 35 countries, including 72 Masters of Wine and 22 Master Sommeliers. Ruffoni was in esteemed company, with other notable judges such as Tim Marson, a Master of Wine, and Beth Willard, Co-Chair of the competition. The judging process was overseen by experienced regional chairs and a five-person team of Co-Chairs, ensuring a well-structured and authoritative panel.
Aside from his role at the DWWA, Ruffoni is also a respected educator. He teaches Sommelier Fundamentals at the Madrid Culinary Campus of Comillas University, sharing his passion for wine with the next generation of sommeliers.
