Winds Raging Through Düsseldorf, Led by Bernd
In the heart of Düsseldorf, Monday, January 6, saw the city grappling with the aftermath of Storm Bernd. The meteorological event, known for its wind speeds reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour, left a trail of destruction in its wake.
The Düsseldorf Fire Department was kept busy, responding to more than 62 weather-related incidents throughout the day. The increased number of calls to the control center started midday and involved fallen trees, broken branches, loose roof tiles, or facade cladding.
One of the most significant incidents occurred in Kalkum, where a tree fell across the street and the Anger. The fire department, equipped with a chainsaw, winch, and crane, worked tirelessly to remove the tree, allowing water to flow freely again. Tragically, no injuries were reported, but there were numerous cases of property damage.
Another notable incident took place at Moskauer Straße in Oberbilk, where loose parts of the outer cladding of a building required the fire department's intervention around 15:12. The high-angle rescue team was deployed to secure and partially remove the loose facade parts. The danger was eliminated after approximately three hours.
Elsewhere in the city, a birch tree fell from a private property onto Hohenfriedbergstraße in Eller, damaging two parked cars. The fire department swiftly removed the fallen tree, and the police documented the damage.
In a less dramatic but equally important incident, a promotional banner came loose from the roof of a building at Uerdinger Straße in Golzheim. Deployment forces were able to secure the banner back in place.
The last storm-related deployment was reported to the control center at 19:30, marking the end of a long and challenging day for the Düsseldorf Fire Department. As the city begins to pick up the pieces, residents and emergency services alike are reminded of the unpredictable power of nature and the vital role of emergency responders in keeping the community safe.
